Sexual Assault Reform In Australia

“We’ve failed”, said Brittany Higgins at the National Press Club today in response to Scott Morrison’s apology and the Set the Standard Report.

In today’s speech with sexual assault advocate Grace Tame, Higgins criticised Prime Minister Scott Morrison and said she doesn’t “words {she} wants action”.

The report aims to combat the toxic culture reported in parliament. Higgins said that this can only be achieved if they are “paired with institutional change”.

She continued to question the achievability of the reforms as without the “clear targets there can be no accountability”.

She said changes must first come from the Prime Minister, but his recent speech, in which he called for “to imagine it was our daughters,” proved disappointing.

”I didn’t want his sympathy as a father I wanted him to use his power as Prime Minister”.

Founder of the Survival Hub in Melbourne and Sydney believes that Scott Morrison’s apologies are “fake” and a political move for the upcoming election.

She says his promises are “empty” and that “he doesn’t have the compassion or capacity” to understand the matter.

In response to his handling of the situation she agrees that he has “failed” and more so “failed Brittany”.

In response to the Set the Standard Report she criticised the collective federal approach and urged a “state by state” change to improve the system.

She said that it is “supernormal” for victims to wait over three years for their court date and some are waiting months for a reply from police.

She wants a “promise” for court dates and recognition of “First Nations people, people of colour, gender diverse groups and men” in the matter.

She says that lots of “people are being left out of the conversation” and both Higgins, Tame and “everybody {should} take more responsibility” in recognising these victims.
